1920年代的鵝頸橋「堅拿」是英文 Canal 的廣東話譯音，意思為運河。堅拿道的前身，是從跑馬地流向維多利亞港的黃泥涌的河口，其後於十九世紀末擴建為寶靈頓運河。堅拿道東及堅拿道西是在這運河兩旁的道路。由於這條運河又長又窄，彎曲成鵝頸的形狀，因此被當時的人稱為「鵝頸澗」，橫過這段河道的橋便稱為「鵝頸橋」，該區附近一帶更得名為「鵝頸區」。後來於1922年至1929年，香港政府於灣仔進行填海工程，寶靈頓運河亦變成暗渠，當時的鵝頸橋被拆卸。
到了1970年代，為了配合香港海底隧道的通車，香港政府於鵝頸澗上方興建行車天橋，由摩理臣山道起跨越軒尼詩道及告士打道，連接香港海底隧道銅鑼灣出口。有關路段後來稱為堅拿道西天橋，於1972年3月29日落成，早於香港海底隧道的通車日期。其後為了配合香港仔隧道的通車，堅拿道天橋沿摩理臣山道及黃泥涌道於1976年動工延長至香港仔隧道跑馬地出口。後來為了應付日漸繁忙的交通，堅拿道天橋再被擴建，旁邊多了一條行車天橋，是為堅拿道東天橋。現時這條行車天橋，仍被俗稱為「鵝頸橋」。而於堅拿道天橋橋底近軒尼詩道，有人打小人，尤其是在驚蟄的時候就更常見，成為香港文化的一個特色。 thanks...very much 收集到舊圖片真厲害! 多謝分享,睇到唔少珍貴既舊相!!! 相片真係超珍貴, 好利害
