LETS TALK ABOUT LAMBORGHINI

History of L147 (Murciélago)

The long awaited Lamborghini Diablo successor is nearing the introduction during a special ceremony held at Sant'Agata in early September, but the German Auto Motor und Sport magazine managed to get the very first photo's of this very secret new supercar from Automobili Lamborghini SpA.
This car was still disguised but with the aid of computer editing, a decent look at the new Lamborghini could be presented, the design created by a team of both German (Audi) and Italian (Lamborghini) designers under supervision of Luc Donckerwolke still looks closely related to the current Diablo, but this had been intended from the start, when Mr Piech decided to stop the Canto development by Zagato.

A first attempt at redesigning the front and rear part of the new Lamborghini was created by long time Lamborghini designer Bertone, but Audi AG didn't really like the initial results so they moved the design in-house, which led to the car that will be presented in September.

The basic technologies of the new Lamborghini are well known by now, the famous 60 degree, 48 valves V12 engine will have a displacement of 6.0 liter and will deliver between 570 hp and 590 hp, later more powerful versions will be introduced producing way over 600 Bhp, but at first the four wheel drive version will be presented with the 570 Bhp version, coupled to a sequential six speed gearbox that will be available right from the start.
This new Lamborghini will first be introduced as a coupe, but a Roadster version is already being designed, with more powerfull SV and GT version being considered.
According to CEO Guiseppe Greco there will no longer be a 'model year' policy, but different versions will be introduced each year, first the VT model, than the Roadster in 2002, an SV or GT edition in 2003 and so on ..., after the introduction of the L147 on the September Frankfurt Auto Show, Greco intends to sell a total of 60 to 80 units in 2001. The new Lamborghini will be introduced on the US market during the 2002 Detroit Auto Show in Januray, after which the production figures should become around 2 cars each day, resulting in a production of 450 L147's each year.

Still using a mid engine layout, the L147 uses a steel tube space frame chassis with the steel roof welded on, the doors are still aluminum while most of the other bodyparts are Carbon Fiber.
The L147 remains close to the current Diablo's layout, with the gearbox in front of the engine, it is very nice to see the engine cover seen on some photo's looks a lot like the one used on the legendary Miura, while later photo's show a revolutionary new design.
The L147 will receive a computer controlled suspension setup which controls the firmness and ride height depending on the speed of the car, this new model will also use a wide front track like the Diablo GTR's and a front mounted oil cooler, because the front overhang became a little longer, the luggage space the L147 offers is larger than the current Diablo VT 6L one.
As we could see on the limited edition Diablo SE 6.0, the interior of the new Diablo will be subject to the highest standards both in ergonomy and finishing, only the best materials will be used from the top suppliers available and the overall finishing will be a very high level, note that the interior was also redesigned by a team from IngolStadt headed by Luc Donckerwolke.

This new Lamborghini will again be named after a fighting bull, Automobili Lamborghini SpA tried eigth different names for the car, but much to their surprize, all these names were already taken by the competitors, so a new name had to be found while the fifth prototype was performing the final test runs, AutoWeek proudly published in their latest August issue the L147 would be called 'Murcielago', the Spanish for 'bat' and one of two names Automobili Lamborghini SpA registered over the last two months.
When this all new Lamborghini will be available to the public it will be listed in Europe for about US $ 200,000, but expect the price in the US to be higher than this, probably closer to $250,000, the final price of the L147 will only be a little over the list price for the current Diablo VT 6.0 because new techniques from Audi AG that will be used for the production and the lower part costs were able to keep the price reasonable. The car will remain rather exclusive because only 450 will be built each year, so waiting lists could become rather long for this new exotic.

For the 2003 production year, a total of nearly 2000 Lamborghini's will be built, with the introduction of the new L140 model that should become available during the summer of 2003 and at the same time will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the company.
To be launched at a price equivalent of $ 135,000 today, it will become a direct competitor for the Ferrari V8 models, using an all aluminum bodywork and an aluminum spaceframe created with the help of Audi AG, the L140 will use a new V10 engine being developed right now in Sant'Agata that should deliver over 400 hp and feature all wheel drive and a six speed gearbox, either a manual or a sequential version. The Formula One inspired sequential unit will probably be Magneti Marelli's SeleSpeed unit, design of this all new Lamborghini model could very well be executed by Fabrizio Guigiaro.

History of Lamborghini Murciélago R-GT.

The first derivative of the already legendary Lamborghini Murcielago that actually entered production was the Murcielago R-GT, a race car based on the standard supercar, that was introduced during the 2003 edition of the world famous IAA Frankfurt Motor Show.

Since the introduction of the Murcielago in September 2001, there has been an increasing demand for a high performance model based on the Lamborghini flagship, therefore Audi AG, current owner of Automobili Lamborghini SpA, decided the time was right to built such an extreme car.

Developed by Automobili Lamborghini SpA, with the help of Audi Sports Division and well known German based Reiter Engineering, the Murcielago R-GT will be built to FIA and ALMS specifications.
This means the engine will still be the massive V12 unit, but now equiped with air restrictors, actual power output hasn't been published yet, but it will be very competitive compared with the cars the Murcielago R-GT will encounter on circuits around the world.
Because of FIA regulations, the VT four wheel drive has been replaced with 'Rear Wheel Drive' only and a six speed sequential gearbox will be mounted, total weight for this high-specs Lamborghini will be in the 1100 Kg FIA class specification.

First rumours mentioned only three cars would be built, and no customer cars would be available, but the press conference on September 9. in Frankfurt told otherwise ... customer cars would be available during 2004 for a base price below 500,000 Euro, note that the Murcielago R-GT is unfortunately not street-legal ...

When you buy the Murcielago R-GT you will also receive support from Lamborghini's own 'Customer Sports Programme', a division of Automobili Lamborghini SpA which not only sells these race cars but is also present on and near the track for assistance if needed.

Once the IAA Frankfurt closes the doors, the Murcielago R-GT will be shipped to Reiter Engineering who will perform extensive tests on the car to further develop it and even increase the already massive potential of this new model in the American Le Mans Series and the European FIA GT races.
Reiter Engineering will enter the car for the Estoril race (October 5, 2003) and the Monza race (October 29, 2003), on both occasions the car will be driven by Oliver Gavin and Dutch race driver Peter Kox. The latter was already a driver on the Diablo GTR that was entered last year in the FIA GT races.
Some sources also state that Vici Racing, owned by Ron Meixner, will run one of the Murcielago R-GT cars in the 1000 Km of Le Mans to work on tire development for this extreme Lamborghini.

Finally Lamborghini's Raging bull will be seen on the race track around the world, 'a perfect oportunity to show the world the advantages of the Murcielago both in competition and in performance' according to Dr Werner Mischke, Chairman and president of Automobili Lamborghini SpA.
The American Le Mans Series will show the magnificent Lamborghini Murcielago R-GT in the United States, still one of the largest markets for Automobili Lamborghini SpA, while the European FIA GT series will also see the return of Maserati during the 2004 season, so the Lamborghini will be up against two of the most important competitors, Ferrari and Maserati

Concept S press release

At the Geneva Motor Show, the House of the Raging Bull will present a new design study that renews a great Lamborghini tradition.
Like the 350 GTS and the Miura Roadster before it, the Lamborghini 'Concept S' is a unique car, an extreme and spectacular expression of the Lamborghini brand.
Created at the Centro Stile Lamborghini in Sant'Agata Bolognese by Luc Donckerwolke, Head of Lamborghini Design, the 'Concept S' is his extreme interpretation of an 'open car'. Using the Gallardo as a basis, Donckerwolke drew inspiration from the classic single-seater racing cars of the past to create this latest design study.

The classic single-seaters did not have a traditional windscreen, but utilised the so-called 'saute-vent' (in French: a sudden change in the wind) in order to direct air over the head of the driver - and so does the 'Concept S'. These devices divide the cabin into two distinct compartments, giving the car an aggressive and futuristic look and also creating a space between them that acts as an additional air inlet for the powerful engine, which is positioned behind the seats.

An electronically controlled, retractable central rear view mirror allows the driver - when required - to see what is happening behind the car.
The aerodynamics of the 'Concept S' have been optimised thanks to front and rear spoilers and a large rear diffuser.

History of Lamborghini Murciélago LP640.
Only days before the 2006 edition of the Geneva Auto Show opened it's doors, Automobili Lamborghini SpA made a rather unexpected announcement ... a new evolution of their flagship would be presented, the Murciélago LP640.

The LP640 designation was simple, the LP stood for the longitudinal position of the V12 engine, like on the Countach range during the Eighties, while the 640 was the number of ranging bulls that were available underneath the accelerator pedal (640 hp or 471 kW at 8000 rpm).

Naturally this increase in horsepower was needed to differentiate the Murciélago from the V10 Gallardo, which boasts 'only' 520 hp for the MY2006 production, but this wasn't the only modificiation, some serious thinking went into a rather important re-design of this supercar.
On the outside you would notice the different front spoiler at once, now more in-line with the design of the Gallardo's front spoiler, it pulls the Murciélago back into the 'Automobili Lamborghini looks', but there's more.
The rear bumper/spoiler now housed a new, massive exhaust pipe, again centrally mounted, but much more impressive compared to the earlier model, also the side air intakes in front of the rear wheels were modified ... an exhaust was added on the left side to run air through an oil cooler mounted in that position.

Fortunately the shoulder mounted air intakes were still present, these adjustable intakes sure impress people at least as much as the upwards opening doors, a well known Lamborghini trademark that is often used in 'tuning' circles these days, even on the Gallardo ...
To finish the tour of the new exterior, the engine cover was now available in a glass finish, allowing everyone to admire the V12 underneath, now with gold painted manifolds ... like on the Diablo SE30 and the Diablo VT 6.0 Special Edition earlier ... a large rear wing isn't available directly from the factory, simply because the Murciélago doesn't need it ... and what isn't needed will only slow it down from it's current top speed of 340 Km/h.
